The reason why I’m an education reporter was found in Blombos Cave on the coast of South Africa.
Overlooking the tumultuous Atlantic Ocean, the cave was home to about 60 beads made from tiny seashells and tinted red using readily available ochre.

I remember laughing while watching curling during the last winter Olympics — the 2006 games.
The sight of a person releasing a big stone while gliding down a sheet of ice doing something between a lunge and the splits struck me as funny. The hysterical part came when two more people scurried to feverishly sweep the ice in front of the big stone with brooms. Odd, awkward and pointless — that’s how it seemed at the time.

Come Feb. 14, we all know the drill.
Purchase one box of dark or milk chocolates, preferably heart shaped. Purchase wrapped roses, preferably a quantity of one dozen in some reddish hue. Purchase one stuffed animal, preferably of the teddy variety. Purchase one greeting card, preferably romantic and sappy in nature.

It’s funny how things don’t get done when you can live without them really being done.
I’ve had a list of at least 20 things that still need to be done around the house that I purchased in August, worked on for three months and moved into in November.

Some Smithville residents’ reactions to the city’s snow removal made me realize: Maybe we journalists don’t always do a good job of making our own policies known.
