Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander  on Dec. 3 certified the results of the Nov. 4, 2014, general election at his Capitol office in Jefferson City.

Jerry Nolte will serve as the next Clay County presiding commissioner after the Republican defeated Democrat Jay Swearingen in the general election Tuesday, Nov. 4. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, unofficial results had Nolte winning the seat by a 57-43 percent margin.

Presiding commissioner candidates share goals for county

With the county’s top elected office open, a pair of new faces will face off Nov. 4 for the opportunity to lead the Clay County Commission through the next four years. Although neither Democrat Jay Swearingen nor Republican Jerry Nolte have been elected to county office, each has served in the Missouri House of Representatives and participated in other civic and private endeavors. Both said their experiences would be vital in serving as presiding commissioner and helped shape their goals for the office and county.

Crowd gathers for county forum

More than 100 local residents came to listen at the Clay County candidate forum hosted by The Kearney Courier, its sister newspapers and Mid-Continent Public Library on Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Woodneath Library Center. The crowd was able to learn about the candidates for the offices of auditor, clerk, collector of revenue and presiding commissioner who will appear on the ballot Nov. 4. The evening was split among the contested races, with specific question-and-answer sessions using prepared and audience-submitted questions.

County candidates to gather for forum

Four county newspapers and Mid-Continent Public Library will host a candidate forum from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the library branch at 8900 N. Flintlock Road in Kansas City.
