Dummy in a chair

I was inside a south Smithville business about an hour ago when I overheard a woman talking about “a dummy in a chair.” She seemed pretty confused. I wondered who she was calling a dummy.

When I left, I realized exactly what she was talking about. Off to the side of U.S. Highway 169, by the road that leads to the new water tower, sat a mannequin wearing a neon green vest in a chair. A couple of Smithville Police cars with officers using radar guns weren’t too far away.

It struck me as funny, and like the woman, I was confused.

I called Police Chief Ken Wilson.

Turns out, it’s just some police officers having fun.

“The guys running radar, for whatever reason, wanted to put a mannequin in a chair,” he told me. “It serves no purpose.”

So if you see the guy lounging in the chair, don’t panic. Perhaps a smile and a wave would be appropriate.
