Smithville gained another new business Dec. 15 with the arrival of Brisbane Veterinary Clinic, a general practice veterinary office at 125B, U.S. Highway 169.

The clinic, owned by Aaron Brisbane, was run from Brisbane’s home in Liberty and focused mainly on horses until recently when Brisbane decided to expand his business to include dogs and cats and set up his own office. Smithville was the first choice for the new office, Brisbane said.

“I spent four years in Platte City, spent four years in the area and left for three years, but I love this area,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to come back to Smithville and have a vet clinic here.”

Originally from Australia, Brisbane moved to America 17 years ago and studied veterinary medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia, starting his own private practice in 2007 in Liberty, according to his Web site. Until this year, Brisbane’s practice mainly offered mobile veterinary work for horses.

The new clinic, however, will offer veterinary services for small animals and Brisbane will continue to offer mobile veterinary services for horses on the side.

The clinic is not open 24 hours, Brisbane said, but he will offer 24-hour emergency service as needed and on certain days the clinic will also offer early drop-offs and late pickups for people who have to work.

The clinic will also offer an animal pickup service for seniors who can’t make it into town.

To find out hours and services offered at the new clinic, call Brisbane at 532-8852.

In addition to the acquisition of the new vet clinic, Smithville also lost a potential business in December as well.

It was announced recently that Smithville would be home to a new liquor store in Lake Stone Plaza called Keg and Barrel and the business had already received a liquor license from the city and was expected to open around the beginning of the year.

However, Deanna Brinton, the entrepreneur behind the new business, has decided to back away from the project for personal reasons and the store will no longer open.

Brinton declined to comment further on the matter.
