12 — On the 12th day of Christmas, the Northland gave to me 12 strings of lights. White lights, red and green lights, little snowmen lights — all twinkle at homes throughout Clay and Platte counties. 11 — On the 11th day of Christmas, the Northland gave to me 11 uneaten fruitcakes. When you can’t stomach grandma’s cooking, there’s always good conversation. 10 — On the 10th day of Christmas, the Northland gave to me 10 crying kids. Has anyone actually found a Zhu Zhu Pet around here? 9 — On the ninth day of Christmas, the Northland gave to me a 9 percent chance of snow. Though a white Christmas is rare in the Northland, it might happen this year. 8 — On the eighth day of Christmas, the Northland gave to me eight festive towns. The cities of Kansas City, North Kansas City, Gladstone, Liberty, Kearney, Smithville, Parkville and Riverside brought the holiday spirit to their streets with mayor’s trees, Santa visits and more. 7 — On the seventhth day of Christmas, the Northland gave to me seven spare dollars. Even if you don’t have a lot to give, remember that anything you can contribute to the Salvation Army bell ringers outside local stores, your church’s effort or other charities helps. 6 — On the sixth day of Christmas, the Northland gave to me six stuffed suitcases. Gifts for everyone in the extended family coupled with warm clothing can mean seas of luggage at Kansas City International Airport. 5 — On the fifth day of Christmas, the Northland gave to me five hanging stockings. Don’t forget to leave Santa his favorite treat: cookies and milk. 4 — On the fourth day of Christmas, the Northland gave to me four decorated trees. The Schmitt family grows four types of trees — white pine, scotch pine, canaan fir and Norway spruce — for Santa’s Forest in Holt and Santa’s Tree Farm near Liberty. 3 — On the third day of Christmas, the Northland gave to me three wise men. Nativity scenes — live and those in living rooms — remind us of the reason for the season. 2 — On the second day of Christmas, the Northland gave to me two reindeer. Donder and Blitzen took a break from the North Pole to visit Reindeer Lane tree farm between Smithville and Kearney. 1 — On the first day of Christmas, the Northland gave to me one shopping day.Procrastinators: The shops at Zona Rosa close at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve.
