U.S. Rep. Sam Graves, a Republican from Tarkio, voted against a health care reform bill that narrowly passed the House of Representatives Saturday, Nov. 7, by a 220-215 vote. One Republican voted for the bill, while 39 Democrats opposed it. Graves opposed the bill because it increased taxes, cut nearly $500 billion from Medicare, created new mandates and included a public option that would quickly become the only option for health care coverage, according to a press release from his office. “In short, this bill will increase your insurance premiums, cost us jobs with new taxes and mandates, and cut billions from our seniors’ Medicare benefits,” Graves said in a statement. “The answer to our problem is not to increase government’s role in our health care system.” The bill still must pass the Senate before becoming law.
