Melanie Brock wants to help put the fun back in parenting.

Starting Thursday, Oct. 1, Brock will lead a four-week class for parents called “Love and Logic.”

Brock, Southview Elementary School principal, has been teaching it for 15 years at workshops, events and one on one. Now, however, she’s trying to do it regularly.

Alderwoman Jenny Hayes, who is involved in other groups like Rotary and Optimist Club, helped Brock organize a class after Brock’s advice helped Hayes with her own children.

“It worked like magic,” Hayes said.

Brock said the program teaches just as it is titled: logic.

“It’s leading with empathy rather than anger,” Brock said about punishing children.

She said rather than constantly reminding children the punishment if they misbehave or don’t do something they’re supposed to, parents or teachers should let them learn by the consequences.

“You learn from the experiences,” Brock said.

When Hayes saw Brock’s enthusiasm for the method and results in applying it to her own children, she got to work helping Brock find a way to teach the class regularly. Hayes also wanted to find a way to get people to the class who normally wouldn’t or couldn’t go to the class. She hopes that with help from organizations like the Kearney Rotary Club and Kearney-Holt Optimist Club, there will be scholarships available to those who can’t afford it.

The class costs $40 per person or $50 for couples; that includes all four sessions and materials. There are four sessions: Thursdays Oct. 1, 8, 15 and 22 at Community Covenant Church, 1820 S. Jefferson St.

The cost is the same whether parents attend one or all four sessions. Hayes and Brock said they hope to offer more courses in the future.

“Once you get a few people trying it, experimenting with it, they tell their friends.
